Dry eyes in the winter are a common problem for eye care. Seasonal changes, such as high winds and lower indoor humidity, can lead to discomfort and dry eyes.
You may require a combination of different dry eye treatment options in order to see optimal results.
Artificial Tears: These can help restore natural moisture to the eyes. While available over the counter, if you wear contact lenses you want to make sure you get an option that is contact friendly. Apply artificial tears several times a day to reduce dry eye.
Eye Ointment: Ointments are thicker than eyedrops and you apply them to your inner lower lash line.
Indoor Humidifiers: Since one factor for dry eyes is the use of indoor heaters, you can use an indoor humidifier in order to restore some moisture to the air. Be sure to use an indoor humidifier safely since they can be a breeding ground for bacteria and mold if you don’t clean them properly.
Warm Compresses: If the eyes are red and irritated, a warm compress can reduce discomfort and redness.
You can do different things to prevent dry eyes in the winter. Avoid the use of hair dryers, especially if it’s blowing hot air into the eyes. Keep your home as cool as you can. Wear wraparound style glasses when headed outside to protect your eyes from wind. You can add Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet to help reduce dry eyes as well. Check with your doctor before taking any supplements. If you take an antihistamine to help with cold symptoms, know that this can also lead to dry eyes and you may need to use eye drops during this time.
