ABC VISION

Myopia

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common vision affecting many people of all ages. For those who suffer from myopia, it can be difficult to navigate daily activities such as reading and driving. Fortunately, the specialized eye care professionals at ABC Vision Source in Portland, OR, are well-equipped to provide comprehensive care for myopia patients. Here's what you need to know about myopia.

.

Causes of Myopia

The most common cause of myopia is a genetic inheritance. If one or both parents have the condition, their child will likely develop myopia as well. Other factors can contribute to myopia development, such as prolonged periods of near work and lack of exposure to daylight. Extended periods of reading or staring at a computer screen can also weaken the eyes and lead to further nearsightedness. In addition, some people may be born with an eyeball that’s too long for the focusing power of their cornea and lens; this results in light being focused before it reaches the retina at the back of the eye instead of at its surface.

Symptoms of Myopia

Individuals with myopia typically experience symptoms such as eyestrain, difficulty seeing faraway objects, and the need to squint to see clearly. Other common symptoms include frequent headaches from constant squinting. Driving at night is also unsafe as myopia makes objects blurry and hard to see at a distance. It's best to schedule an eye exam whenever you have eye issues and also annually for general eye wellness.

Children and Myopia

Myopia commonly affects children, and a pediatric eye exam can help us determine how to manage myopia in children. Some options include eyeglasses or specialized contact lenses called orthokeratology, or ortho-k. These lenses are worn while they sleep, and gradually change the shape of their cornea to help them focus on nearby objects. Ortho-k is not for everyone, but it's a safe and effective option for many children who don't want to wear glasses or can't tolerate them. Myopia can progress with young children as their eyes are still growing. We are a pediatric eye doctor specializing in myopia control for young children.
