Glaucoma and cataracts are both diseases of the eye that impair vision. However, they are very different from each other. A person might even have one condition or even both. At ABC Vision Source in Portland, Sherwood, and Hillsboro, we treat glaucoma and cataracts. Early detection of eye conditions is critical, and an eye exam at any of our locations will allow our eye doctor to prevent vision loss from occurring.
Glaucoma involves a buildup of fluid that affects the optic nerve. That buildup puts pressure on the nerve and causes symptoms like eye pain, central vision blind spots, headaches, and blurred vision. The condition is likely to worsen over time, and if left untreated, it is likely to cause blindness in at least one eye.
As you age, your odds of developing cataracts increase. Cataracts are painless cloudy areas that develop on the lens of the eye and are caused by protein deterioration. Common cataract symptoms include blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, perceiving colors as faded, and feeling as if lights are too bright.
Take notice that both glaucoma and cataracts are common in individuals who are diabetic. Although surgery is a treatment option for both conditions, an optometrist is likely to prefer conservative treatment with eye drops. If surgery is necessary, your optometrist can co-manage pre and post-operative care along with your eye surgeon.
If you notice that you're beginning to experience vision difficulty, you may be suffering from cataracts or glaucoma. Both conditions are progressive, so your vision will get worse over time.
